A Look at Our Children's Cozy Home Library Room

Here’s a look at the home library room we built for our kids in our upstairs loft.

What the Loft Looked Like Before

Before building the library shelves, we had two small bookcases. But what you didn’t see were the boxes of books we never unpacked after our move because we simply didn’t have anywhere to put them.

The kids couldn’t easily access their books, and the loft felt underused.

So creating a real home library for our kids quickly moved to the top of our project list.

My husband custom built these floor-to-ceiling bookshelves with enclosed cabinets below to hold games and puzzles and then we added these soft gold cabinet pulls from Amazon.

We also added arched tops to soften and balance all the straight lines from the windows and loft spindles. The arches felt more custom and unexpected and really took the project to the next level.

Blue is usually my go-to paint color, but for this space I wanted something moodier. I chose Sherwin Williams Rosemary, a deep historic green that creates such a rich backdrop for all the colorful children’s books.

Choosing the library Furniture

At first, we styled the loft with two beautiful swivel chairs and a large marble-top table I found on Marketplace. I pictured the kids using it for puzzles and board games.

But after a year, I realized something funny…

They still brought everything downstairs.

The bulkier furniture just made the loft feel cramped.

Around that same time, I found these vintage library steps at a yard sale — such a once-in-a-lifetime thrift find — and I knew they had to stay. But there simply wasn’t room for both the steps and all that furniture.

So something had to give.

Creating a Cozy Reading Nook

We swapped the chairs and table for one simple adjustable chaise lounge.

That one change made the biggest difference.

Now the kids have:

room to roll and climb the steps
space to browse books
and a cozy spot to curl up and read

At the same yard sale, I also found a trio of vintage brass frames. I made silhouettes of our three kids and hung them along the side of the shelves for a personal touch.

Those little collected pieces are what make the room feel like us, not just styled.

Old World Meets Light & Airy

What I love most is the balance.

The deep green paint, library steps, and vintage details bring that classic, old-world library character.

The neutral chaise, warm whites, and open loft keep everything feeling light and airy.

At bedtime, I love hearing the kids rolling the steps across the floor while choosing their books. (And yes — the caster wheels are definitely a little squeaky and probably need grease.) But it’s such a sweet reminder that they’re actually using this space and reading every night.

And that’s exactly what we hoped this room would do — support our everyday family life.
