As part of the heart of the home, this is one of my favorite spaces. With the two-story ceilings, I really wanted it to feel open and airy—but not cold or expansive. I layered in things that make a room feel cozy: rugs, warm woods, some woven texture, and leather accents.

The sloped chimney design was inspired by a Studio McGee’s project I loved. It softens the whole space and adds just enough interest to balance out the straight lines and boxier feel of the room.

I layered a patterned rug over a neutral jute one—not just for the added cushion, but because that extra textile layer brings so much cozy texture to the room. This small marble-top round table is the newest addition, and I love the classic shape of the legs. It adds just the right touch of timeless charm.

My husband was our trim carpenter and built all the bookshelves in our home—these included. They’re painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Gray Owl,” one of my favorite soft grays that still feels light and fresh. A lot of the shelf decor has been thrifted or bought over the years, but I linked everything I could find (or similar options) down below.
