Have you ever started decorating a room and realized you weren’t actually sure what your style was?
Maybe you’ve spent hours saving inspiration on Pinterest. You love modern traditional spaces. But you also love cozy English cottage homes. And then there’s that beautiful organic modern living room you can’t stop thinking about.
You appreciate all of them.
But when it comes time to decorate your own home, suddenly every decision feels harder.
You buy a lamp you love.
You find artwork that catches your eye.
You bring home a pillow, a chair, a side table.
One decision at a time, everything seems right.
Until one day you step back and look around the room and think:
“Why doesn’t this feel right?”
The pieces are beautiful.
The room just doesn’t feel connected.
It feels random. Unfinished. A little “off”.
If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone.
One of the simplest and most helpful design tools I’ve ever used is what I call the 3-Word North Star.
Before I start making decorating decisions, I choose three words that define the direction of the room.
Those words become the filter for every decision that follows.
Those three words become your North Star.
WHY THREE WORDS WORK
When you define what you’re trying to create, decorating becomes much less overwhelming.
Instead of making decisions in isolation, every choice starts working together toward a shared vision.
Suddenly it becomes easier to decide:
• what furniture belongs in the room
• which paint colors support the overall feeling
• what decor to bring in
• what no longer fits
Most importantly, you stop asking:
“Do I like this?”
And start asking:
“Does this support the room I’m trying to create?”
That small shift changes everything.
Because creating a beautiful home isn’t about collecting more things.
It’s about creating a space that feels intentional, cohesive, and uniquely yours.
STEP-BY-STEP: HOW TO FIND YOUR ROOM STYLE
Step 1: Create a Pinterest Inspiration Board
Start by creating a Pinterest board for the room you want to decorate.
At this stage, don’t overthink it.
Save anything that catches your eye: rooms, paint colors, furniture, lighting, textures, styling details, or even one small corner that feels beautiful to you.
The goal is not to define your style right away.
The goal is to gather enough inspiration that patterns begin to appear.

Step 2: Look for repeating themes
Once you have 20 to 30 images saved, scroll through your board and ask yourself:
What do these rooms have in common?
Look beyond the individual pieces and pay attention to the overall feeling and patterns that keep showing up.
You might notice things like:
- soft neutral colors
- cozy, layered textiles
- vintage or collected pieces
- lots of natural wood
- dark, moody tones
- clean lines and simplicity
- bold contrast
- warm lighting
This is where descriptive words begin to emerge.
You may find yourself repeatedly drawn to spaces that feel warm, collected, calm, or timeless.
You might also notice a style direction appearing, such as modern traditional, English cottage, or organic modern.
Don’t worry about choosing your three words just yet.
For now, simply pay attention to the themes that show up again and again.
Those patterns are often revealing your style before you’ve even put it into words.
Step 3: Choose Three Words
Now it’s time to narrow your vision down to three words.
These words will become your North Star, guiding every design decision you make moving forward.
As you review your inspiration board, think about the spaces you’re most drawn to and ask yourself:
- How do I want this room to feel?
- What style am I naturally drawn to?
- How do I want to live in this space?
Your words don’t all have to describe the same thing.
One might describe a feeling.
One might describe a design style.
One might describe the experience or function you want the room to support.
Some examples might be:
- Light & Airy
- Cozy
- Collected
- Timeless
- Earthy
- Vibrant
- Calm
- Moody
- Classic
- Warm
- Purposeful
- Relaxed
For example, your three words might be:
Moody • Classic • Collected
or
Cozy • Warm • Timeless
or
Modern Traditional • Calm • Inviting
There is no perfect combination.
The goal is simply to create a clear direction for the room.
These three words will become the filter you use for every purchase, styling decision, paint color, and furniture choice moving forward.
If a piece doesn’t support one of your three words, it’s probably not the right piece for that room.
EXAMPLE FROM OUR PRIMARY BEDROOM

When I was designing our primary bedroom, I landed on three words/phrases:
Cozy
Fresh
Refined Casual
Those words became the filter for every decision I made in the space.
Cozy
I wanted the room to feel like a retreat at the end of the day.
That meant soft, layered bedding, warm textures, and a plush rug underfoot. Every element was chosen with comfort in mind.
Fresh
I wanted the room to feel light, airy, and calming.
For me, that looked like soft blue tones, silky soft bedding, and plenty of natural light. I wanted the space to feel peaceful the moment I walked in.
Refined Casual
Our home needs to be lived in and comfortable, but I also appreciate spaces that feel thoughtful and well-designed.
Refined casual became the balance between those two things.
It guided everything from the furniture selections to the styling details, helping the room feel relaxed without feeling unfinished and polished without feeling formal.
Once those three words were established, decorating became much easier.
Instead of asking, “Do I like this?” I could ask, “Does this support the feeling I’m trying to create?”
That simple shift helped every decision work together, resulting in a room that feels cohesive, intentional, and true to how we want to live.
QUICK TIP
If a piece doesn’t support your three words, it probably doesn’t belong in the room.
That doesn’t mean every item has to be a perfect match. But when you’re unsure about a purchase or decorating decision, your three words can help bring clarity.
They become a simple filter that keeps you moving toward the feeling you’re trying to create instead of collecting pieces that don’t work together.
If you’re struggling to define your decorating style, the three-word North Star is a great place to start.
You might be surprised how much easier decorating becomes when you have a clear direction and a framework for making decisions.
